  • Favorite Gifts I Gave for Christmas

It's always helpful to reflect after the holiday to look back and see which gifts really made them say, wow! It helps for subsequent gifts to your recipients but also, everyone loves a pat on the back when they really knocked it out of the park. Favorite Family Gift My favorite family gift I gave this year were beautiful wood carved ornaments. These unique ornaments took each person’s name and created a unique snowflake shaped ornament out of carved wood. Just like each snowflake is unique, the letters of each person’s name made each ornament uniquely shaped. Including each family member’s name, made this group gift special for the entire family. This also made it a great way to have a full set of ornaments for the Christmas tree! Favorite Teenager Gift My favorite gift I gave to a teenager was a sweatshirt and t-shirt from the Sesame Street collaboration with Flamingo Estate. This sarcastic yet comfortable clothing was the perfect gift for the Gen Z teenager in my life who is so hard to shop for. It was the perfect blend of cool nostalgia with a nonchalant aesthetic. The sweatshirt and hoodie featured Oscar The Grouch so naturally I paired the gift with a tiny Christmas tree in a tiny trash can with a money ornament, wrapped with real money. Everything a teenager needs who is about to graduate high school! Favorite Neighbor or Group Gift Every year I like to get my neighbors a little gift that is sweet but budget friendly. This year for my neighbors, I decided to go with popcorn and a little popcorn bowl. At the time of this post, I purchased a variety pack of popcorn for $45, with a $5 coupon code bringing it to $40. For 6 neighbors, that's $5 for each treat and the bowl cost just under $8. Win-Win! Favorite Kid's Gift My favorite kid's gift was given to my niece. I gave her this Barbie Gymnastic Playset paired with a balance beam that she absolutely loved. She was obsessed with walking on that balance beam, and a gift that gets any kid's energy out is a gift not only to that child, but to their parents as well! Favorite Guy Gift The best guy gift this year went to Frank August Whiskey paired with a leather tooled cooler. Opening the refined cooler is gift enough but I love sneaking in an extra surprise! This up and coming spirit brand in it's elegant bottle, is the perfect gift to give any whiskey lover! I hope you had a great holiday season and all your gifts were well received! Very Happy Gifting! ... VHM

  • January Christmas Prep: How to Prepare for Christmas this Month

Ok, I know it’s January and the last think you probably want to think about is Christmas since it just past but if you plan in small chunks the holidays are easier to prepare for. Think about how soon Valentine’s day is, it’s just around the corner. Soon you will be feeling that way about summer, fall and inevitably Christmas. This month I’m taking the time to review last Christmas. If you didn’t take the time to read this post, do it now! Reflection is most valuable when everything is fresh in your mind. The further we get from Christmas the less you’ll remember the details. This year we’ll take a little time around the 25th of every month to prepare for the holidays and make progress on all aspects of planning and gift giving. Spreadsheets: Update Your Christmas Notes Look through your gift lists and spreadsheets. Did you write down all the details of the gifts you gave for Christmas? Did you write down how much they cost? Also, did you note the response you got from the recipient? If you didn’t take these notes, then now is the time to update this information so that when Christmas comes around you have accurate notes to refer to. Budget: Contribute to Your Christmas Budget Holiday spending puts a dent in everyone’s wallet but you don’t have to regret your purchases if you plan ahead. There are a few ways to get ahead of your Christmas budget. First, you can determine your per person budget, say $100/person or an overall budget, say $1,000 total, and put aside money each month. When November and December comes around your savings account is ready for the increased spending. Second, you can start your shopping early. Plan on buying one gift a month or more if you have a large list. So that all you have to worry about is the fun stocking stuffers at the end of the year. Let’s call these two aspects of Christmas your homework for this month. Next month we’ll circle back and work on making progress in another area so you’re prepared for the end of the year. Very Happy Planning! … VHM

  • February Christmas Prep: How to Prepare for Christmas this Month

It’s still early in the year but if you read the January Christmas Prep post you know that the goal is to make progress each month so the holidays don’t catch us off guard. This year we’re taking a little time around the 25th of every month to prepare for the holidays and make progress on all aspects of planning and gift giving. A Quick Recap of this Year: Last month we took the time to review last Christmas. We updated our gift spreadsheets with all of the gifts that we gave during Christmas. All of the clothes, toys, gadgets and stocking stuffers were noted, as well as their recipient’s reactions to these gifts. We also talked about setting a budget for Christmas by setting aside a monthly stipend for the holiday season with a direct deposit amount or just a calendar reminder, or simply planning to purchase a gift each month so you don’t have to think of all the gift ideas at the end of the year. This month we are starting to think about what to give for Christmas gifts. I get it, it’s early but gift giving is what this site is all about! This month we are getting strategic about gifts and gift ideas for Christmas. Let’s start thinking of ideas for gifts based on the resources recently presented to us. In layman’s terms, look at all of the Valentine’s Day gift guides for Christmas ideas. Valentine’s Day Gifts as Christmas Gifts Valentine’s gift guides recently flooded inboxes and social media and they are still timely in internet browser searches. Use those recommendations to start getting the ideas churning for Christmas. For Him: Use these roundups and gift guides for guys to start thinking about what your significant other would love for Christmas. If you had a few ideas on what to get him for Valentine’s Day but only decided to purchase one, buy the other item or items for Christmas. Whether it’s for his main gift, smaller gifts or stocking stuffers all will go a long way in getting ahead for the holiday season. Another reminder is that there is more than one him! Don’t forget about all the men in your life that could benefit from data mining the valentine’s day gift guides. What about your male friends and family members that aren’t your romantic partner? Valentine’s Day gifts can be utilized for anyone you love! For Her: On the same note, use the Valentine’s Day gift guides for women for the women in your life. Whether it’s for your mother or sister, use these guides to find gifts that they will love. A real benefit of using these gift guides is the curated sentimentality of these gifts. If there is someone in your life that really loves touching, from the heart gifts this is a great opportunity to grab a great gift for them! Another reminder is to check out all the Galentine’s Day gift guides for all your girlfriends and stock up on sweet gifts and stocking stuffers for your friends, cousins and coworkers. Your homework for this month is reviewing Valentine’s and Galentine’s Day Gift Guides and use them to source gift ideas for Christmas. Next month we’ll circle back and work on making progress in another area so you’re prepared for the end of the year. • 2022 Christmas in Review

It’s time to assess the season and take inventory. What worked, what didn’t this Christmas? It’s time to think through all the little parts that you didn’t have time to think about before Christmas. With gift shopping, decorating and all of the events of the season it’s tough to take stock of all the details but after the holiday you have a little less time and a little less stress. Gifts Think about what gifts had the best and biggest reactions. Were they personalized? Were they expensive? Were they hand made? Was the gift purchased from a store, but it came with a personalized note? What made the greatest impact on your recipients? This year, for my mother, I made a retro viewer from the custom gift guide with pictures of all of her kids (my siblings) and made a reel of pictures of us through the years. It was very sentimental and personal for her so she cried happy tears looking through the family memories. When reviewing reactions like this I like to take note of how much the personalization really meant to her for future gifts. You need to mix it up, and every gift can’t be the same round up of photos but keeping in mind that these types of gifts really speak to my mom will help me for future gifts. People What did you learn about your family and friends that you didn’t know before? If you were lucky enough to spend time in person with your family this year, what did you learn about these people that you already know so well? Were there any new life events? Were there any new personal style updates? Any specific tastes that were revealed through your time together? This year I found out that my brother really loves to eat out at restaurants. Now, I believe we all like a nice meal but he really enjoyed savoring his meals and describing them to the family as well as describing previous dishes he’s had before, in specific detail Maybe this is just a new anecdote but also it could lead to a great gift. Restaurant gift certificates, cooking classes, cookbooks etc. Whether it’s a new home, a new baby, a new music artist or a new hobby, think about when someone said “oh I just love…” that is your chance to take note of the beginnings of a great gift! Time Did you wish you had more time with your family this year? Did you wish you had more time to get organized? More time to shop? More time to wrap presents? Or more time to enjoy the holiday festivities? If there was anything that set you back, make notes to help insure that you are on top of things next year. Add reminders to your calendar to get your tasks done early. You can add a monthly reminder on the 25th of every month to get one holiday item done. Whether it’s buy one gift a month, plan out a budget, take more time off from work etc. The only way to have more time for the holidays is to start earlier in the year, to give yourself more time. Decorations Take a look around. Did you set the scene the way you wanted to? Did your Christmas tree have enough ornaments? Did you wish you had a fake tree instead of a real tree? Did you over decorate? Are you completely tired of a certain color scheme? Take notes on what you want to change for next year. If the tree was in the wrong place, make a note. If the stockings weren’t big enough, make a note. If you want another front door wreath, make a note. Take advantage of the deep discounts on holiday décor after Christmas. Donate the items you didn’t use this year that you don’t think you’ll use next year. Wrapping Paper Take an inventory of the wrapping paper you have left over. Is it plentiful or has it dwindled after all that wrapping? Do you need more ribbon and bows? Again, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the deep discounts on wrapping paper and put them in your wrapping section for next Christmas or upcoming birthdays and celebrations. Now is the best time to think about what you’ve learned this year to make next Christmas even better. It’s temping to throw in the towel on Christmas until next December but before you do, give it a little thought and take a few notes. For the items you don’t take immediate action on, put those notes in your calendar for next year, say around October 1st so you can get in gear early! For more tips on reviewing the Christmas season, check out this post! Very Happy Gifting! … VHM
