  • Christmas in Review

Is it too soon to talk about Christmas? Just kidding, it’s never too soon! I know that Christmas is a lot. It’s a lot in all the right ways and sometimes in all the wrong ways too. How was your Christmas? How was the entire experience, from the decorating to the gifting, to time with family to the shopping? Was it amazing—nothing you’d want to change? Or do you need to make some tweaks for next year? Here are a few things you can do right now to help make next year’s holiday season even better! Organize It’s time to take down your holiday décor but before you do, go through what you didn’t use. Is there anything that you can donate that you didn’t put up this year? If every year you buy a few more holiday pieces then it might be time to donate what you didn’t use. Don’t store items for another year that you won’t use. Before you take down your ornaments, make sure you have an organized place to put them. If you haven’t invested in Christmas storage before, then now is the time to upgrade your storage situation. Head to Target or the Container Store or your local big box store and buy some storage and ornament totes and bins. Donate This is also a great time to donate any clothing or electronics that you don’t need. If you received three sweaters for Christmas, are there a few old ones you want to get rid of? Are there any new electronics or kitchen appliances that you received that can replace old ones? Donate them so they can be useful to someone else and clear out the clutter in your home. One thing I love to do is have an After Christmas Swap! Exchange any unwanted items with a group of close friends. If you have friends that would wear some of your sweaters or could use some new-to-them appliances, trade with them! This can even be done over zoom and ship out any items that you trade. Review the Gifts you Gave Did you get the reaction you wanted from your gift recipients? Did anyone’s reaction fall a little flat? Did you learn anything about what they would have liked instead? Take notes! Write everything down so that you can reference it next Christmas. If you haven’t used the Very Happy Merry spreadsheet yet, now is a great time to start! Write notes from this Christmas and any ideas that you have for gifts next Christmas on the last tab. And start your gifting early! Buy One Gift Now I know it seems early, but every year it goes by so fast. Buying one gift a month helps distribute the stress and financial load throughout the year so there is less to do during December. Great gifts are on sale during "After Christmas Sales" and you can get some great finds! The gifts I like to buy first are for the recipients with needs that won’t change too much with time. Don’t buy your family member baby clothes because babies will be a different size by the end of the year. This is a great time to buy neighbor gifts, teacher gifts, and boss’ gifts. Buy at least one gift now and add it to your spreadsheet—you don’t want to forget that you already crossed someone off your list come December! Very Happy Gifting! … VHM

  • Easy DIY Ornaments

Decorations for the holidays can get a bit pricey. Trimming the tree, wreaths on the door, outdoor lights and lawn accessories, it all adds up! One way to have special ornaments on your tree is to make them yourself. You and your family can make it a tradition, so that every year you have another addition to your tree. For these easy (and beautiful!) do it yourself ornaments you’ll only need a few things: Empty Ornament Balls: I used 3” plastic ornaments and 5” plastic ornaments. Ornament Filler Feathers: I chose beige feathers and gold tipped feathers but they have so many color options! Ornament hangers or ribbon. Open the clear ornament top and add the feathers. Arrange the feathers around the inside of the ornament so they create an interesting shape within the ornament. You can evenly space out the feathers or crisscross them around the sphere. You can use a q-tip to reach into the ornament and help arrange the feathers. After you’ve arranged the feathers hang the ornament on your tree using an ornament hook or ribbon. And voila! You’ve got a handmade ornament and memory that will last you for this and many holidays to come. … VHM

  • 10 Ways to Celebrate the Holiday Season

Sometimes we get so wrapped up with buying gifts that we forget to actually CELEBRATE the holiday season! Don’t get me wrong giving thoughtful gifts to my friends and family is one of my great joys in life but we also need to celebrate the season! Take a little time to enjoy the holidays by doing any or all of these ideas. The first items that I’m going to leave un-listed are to buy, wrap and ship presents. I thoroughly enjoy these activities, but they are par for the course when it comes to the holidays so I will leave them off this list—but don’t forget to do or enjoy them! 1. Have a wrap party After you’ve purchased your presents wrap them with someone! The more the merrier! Gather gift wrap, tape scissors and ribbon and wrap with friends or family. This will make the task go by faster and make it more enjoyable instead of a chore. Don’t forget the holiday themed snacks like a holiday themed popcorn tin, holiday cookies, hot chocolate, apple cider—really make it festive! I also suggest adding a wrap battle to your party! Have someone who isn’t wrapping be the judge of the best wrapped gift. This is really fun for any kids in the house, let more than one person be judges and they can vote! 2. Make a Gingerbread House or Christmas Cookies Get messy with Christmas arts and crafts and make a gingerbread house! You can get kits to make it easy to assemble gingerbread houses, trains, Christmas trees, there are so many options. Or really get into the spirit and make one from scratch with your own gingerbread! If Christmas cookies are more your speed, grab some cookie cutters and dough (store bought or made from scratch) and decorate to your hearts content! 3. Watch a Christmas Movie I’m not sure it gets any better than this! This is a great way to relax and slow down during the holiday season. Cozy up under your favorite blanket, yes it can be a holiday blanket if you have one, and watch your favorite Christmas Movie. Better yet, go for a full marathon—morning until night Christmas movies! 4. Zoom Present Exchange If you can’t be with your friends and family this holiday season that doesn’t mean you have to miss the expression on their face when they open the amazing gift you got for them! Schedule a zoom call this holiday and share the love, digitally! 5. Christmas Decoration Drive One of the highlights of December is driving around different neighborhoods and checking out all of the houses adorned with bright twinkling lights! Put on your favorite Christmas music and drive through spirited streets. Make it even more fun by making it a scavenger hunt or play a game of “I Spy”! Be on the lookout for your favorite sights! A sleigh on the roof, icicle lights, a blow up snowman, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, a house with all white lights, a house with only red and green lights, and see who can spot them first. 6. Make Handmade Ornaments If you’re decorating a tree this year, add a few touches of your own. I love beautiful store bought ornaments and baubles passed down from family members, but make some of your own memories this year and create a few new ornaments for your tree. A craft store will have everything you need to make something beautiful, they might even end up being under the tree instead of on it! 7. Easy Hot Chocolate Tasting Mmmmmm, chocolate! Create a flight of hot chocolate to taste test. This can be done with hot cocoa from scratch or really simply with instant hot cocoa mix. Just add in your favorite mix-ins: Cinnamon: Add a cinnamon stick and powdered cinnamon on top Peppermint: Add a candy cane and swirl until it melts in the chocolate, also add some crushed peppermint on top Salted Caramel: Just melt a caramel candy (or two) into your hot chocolate and add a dash of table salt or sea salt to the top. Try these different versions of a holiday favorite drink! If you are imbibing with friends of-age then try a version with Bailey's Irish cream and another with Kalua. Don't forget the whipped cream! 8. Buy a Present for Someone in Need This is the season for giving and it always makes me feel better to get a gift for someone in need. Shopping for someone who will definitely appreciate a gift, no matter who it’s from warms my heart! The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree has always been a favorite of mine but also several stores offer a giving option at checkout. For example, Barnes and Noble offers you the option to buy a book for someone in need at checkout. Take advantage of these offers at least once this season. It brings a child in need so much joy and you will feel the joy of giving too! 9. Light Christmas or Winter Scented Candles Make it smell like the holidays! Light a candle and let the fragrance fill your home while you cozy up with a Christmas book, what a relaxing way to spend a seasonal evening! 10. Buy Christmas Pajamas This one is traditions for so many, but still some people haven’t tried it! There are many ways to do this, you can buy them for your family and have that be the present they unwrap on Christmas Eve, and then wear them and jump in bed to wait for Santa. Or, you can all go to the store together and everyone picks out their own Christmas Pajamas. I, personally, love to go out on Christmas Eve and buy Christmas pajamas. After all the shopping is done and the presents are wrapped I love this one final activity before the big day! 11. Buy a Treat-Yourself present, and wrap it! This year we could all use a little treat for ourselves so if there is something that you want this year that you probably won’t get from anyone else this Christmas, go ahead and buy it. But keep a little of that anticipation and wait until Christmas to open and use it. Hopefully this list gave you great ideas outside of your normal holiday to-do list of decorating the tree and your house, as well as buying and wrapping presents. Very Happy Gifting! … VHM

  • How to Prepare Yourself For Black Friday (through Cyber Monday)

In many states shopping malls might not be open and the stores that are open will have a reduced capacity and therefore allow less people in store. This means that our Black Friday experience is going to be different this year. Let’s call it Cyber Black Friday! This year many more deals will be, and have already started, online. In order for you to be prepared I’ve outlined a complete strategy so you can make the most out of your Black Friday shopping! 1. Make a list, check it twice. If you haven’t created a Christmas list for all the people you need to give gifts to, I ask you, What Are You Waiting For? There’s no time like the present! Make a list of people you need to shop for. Feel free to use my resources to get really organized if you haven't already! 2. Brainstorm After making that list think about what type of present you want to give them, if you know exactly what you want to give, great! Write down that specific present. If you don’t know exactly what you’re giving write down a rough idea. If you’re thinking about a sweater for Mom, or a tech gift for Dad, write down those rough gift categories even if they aren’t specific. 3. Locations Now think about where you might get those items. Whether they are specific gifts or general categories where would you shop for them? Tech gifts for Dad, Best Buy. Sweaters or clothing for Mom, Nordstrom. Beauty gifts for your Sister, Sephora. 4. Pin Tabs Now it’s time to pin tabs on your internet browser. Go to each store that you listed above and pin each store’s homepage your browser’s window. For most browsers, all you have to do is open a tab, go to a website, right click and select "pin tab". Double check that when you close and reopen your browser that your tabs are still there. Some browsers get glitchy and I want you to be ready for Black Friday. That way, as soon as you open your computer all of the stores are quickly listed for you! All you have to do is go from tab to tab to shop. This also allows me to have all of my shopping carts open at once so I see how much I’m spending that day. Pin tabs of stores you know you want gifts from but also from places you regularly shop. You can also pin any URL, which means you can pin google searches of items. Go ahead and pin a google search of that expensive Dyson Vaccuum your Mom wants, and then look at the prices that come up on Google on Black Friday. 5. Add to cart… In advance If one of your pinned tabs is to a retailer that will let you keep things in your cart, then by all means, shop in advance! Add any and all ideas to the cart so that you could purchase. Then on sale day, refresh your browser to see the current sale price. Remember that not all retailers keep record of what’s in your cart so you might want to test this before the big day. Notable cart keepers include Amazon and Nordstrom so I can add items to cart there and they will be either saved in the cart, saved for later or added to a wish list. 6. Don’t Waste Time I suggest you don’t waste time with stores you never shop. If you don’t shop at Macy’s, don’t pin that tab but if you’re always shopping at Bloomingdales, then definitely pin that store. You can browse Macy’s later in the day if you like, after your go-to stores have been shopped first. This will help you get the best selection at your key stores and you won’t mind shopping through the lowered inventory at stores you don’t absolutely love! 7. Prioritize This is not the time to save the best for last! Get your most requested, most limited, best gift first! It may not be there after the weekend is over and then you will have to spend a lot of time and energy thinking of a new gift idea. If that happens, we can help! 8. Prepare your shopping station Don't overlook this last step! You’ll want to prepare an area that you plan to do your shopping from. You’ll want to be in a comfortable place, but not a place you can see yourself getting too comfortable! Get your computer out and place your wallet and credit cards out right beside the keyboard. Grab your holiday list and a pen and paper to write notes, cross off people and gifts as you shop. Prepare a snack and a beverage so that you are prepared for any needs. This all might seem extreme, but since items are moving faster than ever and shipping is probably going to be delayed for the later orders that are placed, you want to get your order in ASAP! My biggest tip is to buy what you want and need as soon as possible. Most retailers will price adjust items if you can prove that it went on sale or if it was cheaper elsewhere. And if you buy a gift for someone, and then later think another gift could be better, then most retails will let you return but do your research on the retailer before you buy too many gifts for the same person hoping to return later. I hope these tips helped! Good luck and have fun! Very Happy Shopping! ... VHM

This elegant makeup brush sanitizer not only looks lovely in any bathroom it sanitizes makeup brushes. We all know someone, or we might be that someone who’s makeup brushes are Dirty—with a capital D! This is perfect for any makeup maven or cleanliness connoisseur. 6. Charging Bracelet Just buy this! This is one of those gifts you can give to literally anyone. It’s a chic bracelet is a stunning accessory on it’s own, but it also charges your phone! When your battery dies, how convenient would it be to just flip open your bracelet? This is great for anyone that uses their phone—so everyone! 7. Towel Warmer Close your eyes, well don’t because you have to read this, but imagine stepping out of a hot shower and the crisp winter air hits your skin, giving you goosebumps all over. You reach for a towel, not a room temperature towel to simply dry off but a perfectly warmed towel that engulfs you in warming heat! Now imagine giving that feeling as a gift, they will think of you every time they feel warm! 8. Brooklinen Towels Brooklinen is making a name for themselves in sheets, but their towels are equally as nice. A nice set of towels is a great pairing to the towel warmer gift in number seven! 9. Hard Toiletry Case I have been eyeing this hard case toiletry case for a while. Last Christmas they introduced it as a limited time item and it sold out now they have it back as a regular item and it comes in so many colors. Filling this with beauty and toiletry samples would be a great gift. This is on my personal wish list! I’m thinking of getting different colors for different purposes. I’d store tech accessories in one so my portable hard drive, chargers and back up battery are protected when I travel. Toiletries in another case, and maybe a third just in case! Get it, case! 10. Away Luggage I love my Away Luggage Bigger Carry-on. I have the version with the battery included. This suitcase has the option to have a built in, yet removable, battery to charge your phone while rolling through the airport. It is a great feature for someone who travels a lot. Even if you’re thinking that we’re not traveling a ton right now, this is still a great gift so that your recipient is ready for their next trip! 11. Silk Pillow Case and Eye Mask Set A silk pillow case and eye mask set is such a great gift for anyone who wants to feel a little extra special when they go to bed or wake up. A silk pillow case helps skin and hair retain moisture for better hair and skin after a night of sleep. The eye mask helps block out light while still helping the delicate eye area retain moisture. Pair this with the silk PJ’s in number two and your recipient will feel spoiled rotten! Have you picked the perfect gift for the ladies in your life? Don't wait too long, these are sure to sell out! Very Happy Gifting! ... VHM

  • Seasonal Fall Candles

The right fall candle can give your home that extra special touch! I love filling my home with the perfect seasonal scent to add to the ambiance. The candles released for the Fall season smell so amazing that it can be easy to go overboard! Here are a few candles that I love to burn throughout Fall. Voluspa: Spiced Pumpkin Latte This candle comes in this beautiful, rich orange colored jar. I love candles that come in jars that I can reuse for other purposes. If you tend to get the same scent over and over, it's great to have a set of the same glass jars for bathroom toiletries or makeup brush holders! The official description of the fragrance of this candle is "notes of fresh Kabocha Pumpkin pulp, Coconut Crema, Spiced Brûlée." To me the pumpkin smell is light, which I appreciate and the overall fragrance is not too sweet. To my nose, it smells almost like sweet, cinnamon milk with Fall undertones. Capri Blue: Spiced Cider This candle comes in a sparkling gold container. It's great for adding a little shimmer and shine to your fall decor! In the mini size they would look great as low candles down the center of a dining table. The official description of the fragrance of this candle is "Sparkling berries and grapes mix with harvest apple and cinnamon within a soothing vanilla and Canadian fir base." To me it smells like the perfect apple cider. The cinnamon is stronger than the apple to me which makes it a little richer versus too sweet with apple. P.F. Candle Co.: Smoky Cinnamon Special This candle comes in a minimalist brown jar with a craft paper label. I love this candle for anyone with a paired down aesthetic or a guy in your life that loves fall as much as you do! The official description of the fragrance of this candle is "Bitter orange, cassia bark, and patchouli." To me is smells like a mix of a freshly washed man and cinnamon. It smells like cinnamon, meets body wash and eucalyptus. It's a fresh take on smoky cinnamon. How do you scent your home during the fall? Do you have a favorite fall candle? Very Happy Gifting! ...
